Quick Facts
Description
The IRT has played a substantial role in developing, testing, and certifying methods to prevent ice buildup on aircraft. The facility can produce continuous airspeeds from 50 to 395 mph and temperatures as low as -30°F year-round, controllable to within one degree Fahrenheit. Supercooled water droplets between 14 and 40 mm and controllable water content can be produced to form an icing cloud.

Name: Icing Research Tunnel
Type: Closed-return, atmospheric-type wind tunnel
Test Section: 6-ft high by 9-ft wide by 20-ft long
Temperature: ambient to -25°F (year round)
Airspeed: 50 to 350 knots (continuous)
Water Droplets: 15 to 50 microns
Facility Manager : John.F.Leone@nasa.gov
