Facility Fact

The Heated Tube Facility simulates high heat flux conditions by passing electric current through single tubes of various lengths and geometries while cooling tubes with desired propellants.

C-1995-605: Sample from the HETF C-1995-551: Technician adjusting test section in the Heated Tube Facility

The Heated Tube Facility at NASA Glenn Research Center investigates cooling issues by simulating conditions characteristic of rocket engine thrust chambers and high speed airbreathing propulsion systems.
Facility Overview
The Heated Tube Facility at NASA GRC investigates cooling issues by simulating conditions characteristic of rocket engine thrust chambers and high speed airbreathing propulsion systems.

The facility simulates high heat flux conditions by passing electric current through single tubes of various lengths and geometries while cooling tubes with desired propellants.

Aero and space programs supported at the facility include high aspect ratio cooling channels, Rocketdyne/Atlas engine upgrades, Air Force HyTech program, Shuttle OMS engine upgrades, and 3rd Generation RLV. In addition, high temperature, high heat flux experiments and analysis, and fluid and thermal analysis tests have also been conducted. The facility also has conducted tests for material compatibility analysis and coking analysis.
