Heat Transfer Facilities - W-5A-2
Heat Transfer Tunnel and Probe Calibration Rig

W-5A-2 Facility Description
This facility consists of a small wind tunnel with a 6x27 inch test section and inlet turbulence control made up of screens, flow straighteners and contraction. Air is drawn in from the room and exits to altitude exhaust. Maximum test section velocity is less than 150 ft/sec. The study the effect of free stream turbulence on stagnation region heat transfer, various turbulence generation grids can be inserted upstream of the test section. A heat transfer model with low voltage electric heaters can be installed in the test section. Hot wire equipment is used to characterize the turbulence production by the grids.

W-5A-2 Special Features
W-5A-2 shares the test cell with two other rigs, and only one at a time can run. The researcher can safely be in the cell while running to observe flow visualization measurements using liquid crystals and smoke wire, in addition to hot wire and photographic techniques. The data acquisition uses the ESCORT D system.
